1. What age groups do your children’s BJJ classes cater to?

We offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for kids in two age groups:

  • Mat Monkeys (ages 5–9) – Fun and engaging foundational martial arts classes
  • Juniors & Teens (ages 10+) – Structured BJJ training focused on skill, discipline, and confidence

These age-specific classes run weekly in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.

 

2. When are the kids’ BJJ classes held?

Monday & Thursday
  • 4:30 pm – Mat Monkeys (ages 5–9)
  • 5:30 pm – Juniors & Teens (ages 10+)
Saturday
  • 9:00 am – Mat Monkeys (ages 5–9)
  • 10:00 am – Juniors & Teens (ages 10+)

4. Does my child need experience to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

No experience is required. Our kids’ martial arts classes are beginner-friendly and focus on helping children build confidence, discipline, and physical coordination from their very first session.

 

5. Do you offer a free trial for kids?

Yes! We offer a free trial session for all new students, available at our Haywards Heath location:

 

6. How much does a kids’ BJJ membership cost?

Memberships start from £49 per month, with a one-time £50 joining fee that includes:

  • Full uniform (BJJ gi)
  • Insurance coverage
  • Grading fees

 

7. Do you offer pay-as-you-go classes?

No, we only offer monthly memberships. This allows us to maintain consistent class sizes, keep costs down, and ensure steady progress for our students.

 

8. Are there any family or sibling discounts?

Yes! We offer 10% off any additional memberships for siblings or family members.

 

9. What should my child wear to their first BJJ class?

Before receiving their uniform, children should wear:

  • Jogging bottoms or leggings
  • A plain T-shirt
    Please avoid zips, buttons, or pockets for safety.

 

10. Do you provide a uniform for new students?

Yes – as part of the joining fee, your child will receive a starter kit, including a BJJ gi and belt.

 

11. What skills and values will my child learn?

At Elements Martial Arts, our kids’ BJJ program focuses on:

  • Building confidence and resilience
  • Improving physical coordination and fitness
  • Teaching respect, discipline, teamwork, and self-control
  • Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a fun and safe environment

 

12. What is your student-to-coach ratio?

We maintain a minimum 5:1 student-to-coach ratio, ensuring each child receives personal attention and support during class.

 

13. Are your coaches qualified to teach children?

Yes. All coaches are:

  • DBS-checked
  • Fully insured
  • First-aid certified
  • Trained in child safeguarding

 

14. How does the BJJ belt grading system work?

We follow the IBJJF grading system, where each belt has a maximum of 4 stripes.

  • A new stripe is awarded every 10 attended classes
  • Upon receiving the 4th stripe, a student becomes eligible for belt promotion

 

15. Do you offer competitions for kids?

Yes! We support junior members who are interested in local and national BJJ competitions. Competing is optional — we never pressure students — but opportunities are available for those who are keen.

 

16. How often are gradings held, and are they included?

We hold two grading events per year, and unlike many martial arts academies, all grading fees are included in your membership.

 

17. Can parents stay and watch the classes?

Absolutely. Parents are always welcome to stay and observe the classes in Haywards Heath.
